Day of Surgery

morning of surgery

On the morning of surgery it is important that your pet does not eat (unless you were specifically told otherwise). Remove water when you get up in the morning.

If your pet takes medications in the morning you should check with your veterinarian prior to the day if you should administer these or not.

Please take your pet out to the bathroom to try to get them to urinate and defecate before coming in to the hospital.

Please bring ALL of your pets current medications with you so we can verify which medications these are and how many you still have (in case we need to dispense more). Please also bring an E collar if you have one so we can make sure it is the correct fit.

Admission to hospital

On the Day of surgery you will have a scheduled time to meet with your veterinarian. In many instances Dr. Feldsien will be present and available to answer any additional questions you may have. A full physical examination is performed, previous bloodwork is reviewed and current medications are recorded.

You will be asked to verify the procedure being performed and asked to verify the procedure being performed and the location of surgery (limb or body part).

Contact information for the person responsible for making decisions is needed so we can contact you (you will be contacted before and after surgery and if any issues arise).

Before and after surgery

You will typically receive a call (or text) prior to the procedure starting and then once they are awake from surgery. Dr. Feldsien will typically wait to call until they are recovered from surgery and back to bed. The results of the procedure will be discussed and important post operative recommendations will be reviewed.

Discharge

Your clinic typically will schedule you a time for pick up when you drop off in the morning. If this changes at all based on surgery Dr. Feldsien, your primary care doctor or one of the technicians will let you know.

At this discharge the aftercare instructions will be reviewed and you will be given a copy of these. Please do not hesitate to ask if anything is unclear. We are also available by phone or email during business hours if needed. Instructions for follow up visits will be documented on the discharge instructions.
